There are three primary hierarchical structures organizing space fighter units. These range in size from a small squadron and groups of squadrons to larger wings and numbered designations.
Hierarchical Structure:
1. Squadron
The fundamental operational unit, typically composed of aircrew and aircraft, responsible for a specific mission (e.g., patrol, strike). Squadrons can also be non-flying units like maintenance or intelligence.
2. Group
Composed of two or more squadrons, often with a mix of flying and support units. For instance, a fighter wing might have an operations group (with flying squadrons) and a maintenance group.
3. Wing
A collection of groups, typically including an operations group, maintenance group, support group, and medical group. Wings are the largest operational unit and may be composite (operating multiple aircraft types) or objective-based (focused on a specific mission).
4. Numbered Space Force
Wings, squadrons, and groups can be assigned to a numbered spaceforce, often with a geographical area of responsibility.
5. Major Command (MAJCOM)
Reporting directly to Air Force Headquarters, MAJCOMs can be organized by mission or region and often times are headquarter in a either land bases and/or in orbit in a space station.
